Williamsburg Technical College Math Contest Held
Eight area high school math teams vied for the top spot during the Williamsburg Technical College Math Contest held Friday, March 23. Schools participating included Andrews High School, Carolina Academy, Carvers Bay High School, C. E. Murray High School, Hemingway High School, Johnsonville High School, Kingstree Senior High School, and Williamsburg Academy.
Team members toured the campus, received their contest t-shirts and heard from administrators and faculty of the College. After lunch, participants learned that the team to take home the coveted “Ein-stein” trophy for first place was Johnsonville High School which included team members Traci Lawrimore, Kayla Bishop, Mitchell Haselden, Hillary Hooks, and Ethan Brewer. Sponsor for the Johnsonville team is Gay Lawrimore.
Johnsonville also received recognition as their team member Kayla Bishop was awarded the first place trophy and medallion as individual winner with the best overall score and top individual school winner; team member Mitchell Haselden was awarded second place as individual winner with best overall score; and Traci Lawrimore was awarded the fifth place individual winner with best overall score.
Williamsburg Academy took second place and Carvers Bay won the third place slot in the overall team category. Williamsburg Academy team members included Chase McFaddin, William “Witt” Cox, Andrew Chinnes, William Welch, and Maggie Ruth with sponsor Shelby McCutchen. Cox also received recognition as school winner for Williamsburg Academy and he was awarded third place in the overall individual winner category. Carvers Bay team members included Jarvis Marsh, Brian Owens, Qushaun Gibson, Johnathon Cribb, and Justin Drayton and sponsors Judith Robinson and Vernetta Dekine. Owens also received recognition as school winner for Carvers Bay.
C.E. Murray student Whitney Sabb took fourth place in the overall individual winner category and was the individual school winner. Other individual school winners were:
Hemingway High School student Felicia Cox, Andrews High School student Michelle Burgess. Kingstree Senior High School student Victor Epps, and Carolina Academy student Courtney Brown.
In addition to trophies and medallions, the top five individual winners also received TI-83 calculators. Sponsors for the event included: Farmer’s Telephone, KFC, Piggly Wiggly, Williamsburg Regional Hospital, the Exchange Bank of South Carolina, Bank of Greeleyville, Martek, ClientLogic, Wal-Mart, Bi-Lo, Pizza Hut, State Farm Insurance, Peebles, Firestone Building Products, Williamsburg First National Bank, Longstreet Chevrolet, Kingstree Federal Savings and Loan, Cumbee Tire, and T& T Hardware.
