WTC ALUMNUS PUBLISHES FANTASY FICTION BOOK
Former Williamsburg Technical College student David B. Floyd, Jr., turned adversity into a dream come true.
The Kingstree native was completing his senior year at East Clarendon High School when a normal morning trip to school turned tragic. Floyd suffered a severe automobile accident which resulted in nearly two months in intensive care and more months of confinement-to a wheelchair. A positive attitude and a loving family were some of his best medicine as he struggled toward recovery, but one of his greatest assets was his imagination which had been fueled throughout his childhood by years of playing outdoors where ditches became canyons, creeks became rivers, trees became mountains, and birds became soaring dragons.
In elementary school he was fascinated with prehistoric animals, writing tales
of them to prove to his fourth grade teacher that he could write well. Floyd’s
facinations moved toward more mythological creatures like dragons – both good
and bad ones – and, as a teenager, he wrote several short stories thanks to the
encouragement of his high school English teacher. Then the accident happened and
his world tilted in a different direction than he had planned.
As part of his rehabilitation, he was encouraged to continue with his future plans – to go to college – so he enrolled in general business and computer resource management classes at Williamsburg Technical College. He had hopes of starting his own business and loved computers, so these two areas interested him. It was during his time at the College that he met WTC English instructor Margaret Chandler who inspired him to create literary pieces based on his love of mythology and magic. With Chandler as his editor and mentor, Floyd honed his personal writings and created even more.
Several weeks ago Floyd published the first book in what is to become a fantasy fiction series entitled Shadows of Krandom. The Rise of the Dragon Prince, book one in the series, introduces readers to the fictional place called Krandom and its royal hero, Mickalie, whose loyalty to his kingdom will be tested as darkness pursues him and his princess, Serenity.
“Holding this book in my hands was surreal,” Floyd says, likening it to what he would imagine it would be like to hold one’s newborn child. “I hope to inspire, entertain, and motivate people to read between the lines and find themselves a place inside my works to root themselves and grow.” Floyd is already working on the sequel, which is tentatively entitled The Seed of Evil.
