Cosmetology Tree Takes First Place in Williamsburg Technical College Contest
Williamsburg Technical College recently held a Christmas tree contest in their library for departments to show their holiday spirit and artistic abilities. Students were encouraged to vote on the trees for the week prior to the employee/retiree Christmas party when the winners would be announced. First place went to the tree submitted by the cosmetology department. Complete with curler ornaments, weave garland, and hair strand tinsel, the star was created on a pair of scissors and the skirt was fashioned from hair color swatches.
Also entered in the contest were a nursing department tree featuring ornaments of medical paraphernalia; a pink financial aid/student services tree with origami birds fashioned from College forms; a silver industrial technology tree with silver bells; an early childhood tree with cut out letters and photos of the presidential candidates; a natural greenery tree by public relations and development; a management information systems tree covered with all types of computer technology items; an old world Christmas tree sponsored by the business office; an English department tree covered with tiny book covers; an instruction office tree featuring small photos of the faculty and staff; a traditional Christmas tree sponsored by Educational Talent Search; a gold and green tree sponsored by Upward Bound; a tree surrounded with a toy train track and small presents designed by Student Support Services; and a winter scene provided by the library staff.
The president’s office and human resources teamed up to make a tree entirely of recycled materials such as sales papers, soda cans and bottles, and an old tire, the creators dubbed the tree a "green" environmentally-friendly recycled budget cut tree. Faculty, staff, and retirees enjoyed the departmentally-catered event which included several games, some awards presentations, and a baby photo guessing contest where employees were provided photos of faculty and staff members as babies or children and were asked to vote on who was who. Following the contest, a poster was displayed which featured adult photos beside the baby photos so employees could see “then and now” versions of their coworkers.
